The Department of Hindi is a very active Deptt. of the University. Apart from offering courses in M.Phil, M.A., B.A.(Hons) and a one year P.G. Diploma in Mass Media & Creative Writing, it has been in the forefront of various academic and cultural activities of Jamia. Although the deptt. is a fairly old one, it started offering Master’s degree only in 1984 But since then it has progressed by leaps and bounds. The Hindi Deptt. has the distinction of being the first deptt. in the country  to have included a paper in creative writing in its M.A. syllabi.   Later on, it started a full-fledged P.G. Diploma in Mass Media and Creative Writing which is the only course of its kind in India in as much as it deals with the “software” of filmmaking and other media activities, namely, screenplay- writing and the like. Although there is no dearth of institutes, both public and private, offering diploma or degrees in Mass Media, the emphasis of all these courses is on the technical aspects and not the “creative” aspects.

Apart from the above, our Deptt. has  also given a very modern look to its traditional courses like M.A. and B.A. (Hons.) We have included a number of twentieth-century poets and writers to make the syllabi not only were interesting for today’s generation but also to impart it a sense of balance. But this has in no way Undermined the importance of medieval Hindi literature in our courses. On the contrary, we have a number of faculty members who are experts in this field and as such teach that most important period of Hindi literature with a lot of panache.

Another unique quality of the Hindi Deptt is its emphasis on a compressive study of Hindi and Urdu literatures. In our M.A. syllabi, we have a separate and comprehensive paper on Urdu  literature which is not the case with the other Hindi Departments. We also encourage research scholars to do research on the various aspects of the relationship between these two sister literatures which are a product of the same “Hindi” belt and as such are very similar in their hopes and aspirations.

Our deptt also runs vocational courses in Functional Hindi at the undergraduate level.

As far as extra curricular activities are concerned, our Deptt. has three committees namely Hindi Samiti (Hindi Committee), Anusandhan Parishad (Research Council), and Shodh Samiti (Research Committee) Hindi Samiti is meant for encouraging the students to take part in extra-curricular activities and the latter two have been created to streamline the research activities of the Deptt. and hold thought-provoking seminars from time to time. Students themselves conduct most of the programmes the auspices of these three committees. Students from all over Jamia participate in the programmes organized by the Hindi Samiti. Prizes and certificates of merit are given away to the winners of various competitions in the annual function of the Samiti.

As far as research work is concerned, we have awarded Ph.D. degrees to 33 persons as on date. Another 34 persons are currently doing research in our deptt. Over the years, our department has also collaborated with like-minded institutions like the Hindi Academy, UGC and others in jointly organizing seminars on the great poets and writers of Hindi. They have been huge successes and won accolades from the academic community of other Universities. We have also been inviting contemporary writers and poets to our deptt. for a “live” interaction with the students. We have also met with good response in this endeavour of ours and many well-known litterateurs kindly accepted our invitation and visited our department. Nagarjuna, Dr. Namwar Singh, Balkavi Bairagi, Kedarnath singh, Dr. Nirmala Jain, Trilochan and Kamleshwar to name a few have all visited our deptt. at one time or other and left on indelible mark on the memory of the students.

The deptt. has further plans to make itself more media oriented, in keeping with the times. Our deptt. is much better equipped to do this than any other deptt. as a number of faculty members are active in media and are very known throughout the length and breadth of the country.
